ENGLISH: Everyone should visit Ghent (or Gent in the Flemish variant), not just lovers who come to Brussels and want to smell Flanders. Even if those who love each other feel understood here, above all for the ancient Latin motto Fides et Amor (fidelity to love).
We are in Belgium, on the medieval cobblestones of this beautiful university town. Its small river port makes it very free because thanks to a series of canals it is even connected to the North Sea.
The farther you go from the center, the more you discover new atmospheres in the ever-changing squares. The unmissable are easy to find, the town hall, the Castle of the Counts of Flanders, the Belfort bell tower famous for being one of the highest in the world declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And then the two quays “delle Erbe” and “del Grano” on the banks of the river Leie, whose course crosses the entire city center. The Cathedral of San Bavone, a jewel of the Flemish Gothic era, contains the most important work, that of the Van Eyck brothers, stolen several times over the centuries: the Adoration of the Mystical Lamb.
But above all, it is wonderful to get lost among the fairytale-style Baroque houses of Ghent, perfectly preserved and enlivened by flower pots, but even more so to take a boat ride because it offers a hidden perspective, especially if you choose a boat that also passes through the smallest water channels.
ESPAÑOL: Todo el mundo debería visitar Gante (o Gante en la variante flamenca), no solo los amantes que vienen a Bruselas y quieren oler Flandes. Pero aqui, los que se aman se sienten comprendidos teniendo en cuenta el antiguo lema latino Fides et Amor (fidelidad al amor).
Estamos en Bélgica, sobre los adoquines medievales de esta hermosa ciudad universitaria. Su pequeño puerto fluvial lo hace muy libre porque gracias a una serie de canales incluso está conectado con el Mar del Norte.
Cuanto más te alejas del centro, más descubres nuevos ambientes con plazas siempre differentes. Los imprescindibles son fáciles de encontrar, el ayuntamiento, el Castillo de los Condes de Flandes, el campanario de Belfort famoso por ser uno de los más altos del mundo declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Y luego los dos muelles “delle Erbe” y “del Grano” a orillas del río Leie, cuyo curso atraviesa todo el centro de la ciudad. La Catedral de San Bavone, joya del gótico flamenco, contiene la obra más importante, la de los hermanos Van Eyck, robada varias veces a lo largo de los siglos: la Adoración del Cordero Místico.
Pero sobre todo, es maravilloso perderse entre las casas barrocas de cuento de hadas de Gante, perfectamente conservadas y amenizadas por macetas, pero más aún dar un paseo en barco porque ofrece una perspectiva oculta, sobre todo si eliges un barco que también pasa por los canales de agua más pequeños.
ITALIANO: Tutti dovrebbero visitare Gand ( o Gent nella variante fiamminga), non solo gli innamorati che arrivano a Bruxelles e desiderano annusare le Fiandre. Anche se chi si ama qui si sente maggiormente compreso considerato l’antico motto latino Fides et Amor (fedeltà a amore).
Siamo in Belgio, sul selciato medievale di questa stupenda cittadina universitaria. Il suo piccolo porticciolo fluviale la rende quanto mai libera perché grazie ad una serie di canali è collegata addirittura al Mare del Nord.
Più ci si allontana dal centro, più si scoprono nuove atmosfere con piazze e piazzette. I must sono facile da trovare, il municipio, il Castello dei Conti di Fiandra, il campanile Belfort famoso per essere uno dei più alti di tutto il mondo dichiarato Patrimonio dell’Umanità UNESCO. E poi le due banchine “delle Erbe” e ” del Grano” sulle sponde del fiume Leie, il cui corso attraversa tutto il centro cittadino. La cattedrale di San Bavone, gioiello dell’epoca gotica fiamminga ha al suo interno l’opera più importante, quella dei fratelli Van Eyck, più volte rubata nel corso dei secoli: l’Adorazione dell’Agnello Mistico.
Ma soprattutto, è bellissimo perdersi tra le case fiabesche in stile barocco di Gent, conservate alla perfezione e ravvivate da vasi di fiori, ma ancora di più fare un giro in barca perché regala una prospettiva nascosta, soprattutto se si sceglie una barchetta che passa anche attraverso i più piccoli pertugi d’acqua.
